Based on the popular TV series, The Apprentice, Community Apprentice is an inter-school competition in which young people develop and demonstrate competencies (such as enterprise and teamwork) whilst developing and executing projects to improve their local communities. At our launch event back in February our very own man in the boardroom, Leader of the Council Sir Albert Bore, issued a challenge to the young people of Birmingham; to raise as much money and awareness for their chosen charity as they could, and to volunteer their time where possible.
Over 200 students, from 10 different schools, have taken part in the 10 week programme, raising thousands of pounds for important causes in their community, all competing with the hope of entering Sir Albert’s boardroom. Integral to the Community Apprentice programme has been support from local businesses, who have donated their time and expertise to mentor students through the project planning process. As well as enhancing their employability skills, Community Apprentice develops young people’s empathy and understanding of social issues. Its legacy is therefore a pool of young people motivated and able to build a better society for all of us.
Our grand finale event, Community Apprentice: The Boardroom, is taking place on the 25th of June, 4.30-7.30pm, at Edgbaston Stadium, where we will celebrate the young peoples’ hard work and see the Community Apprentice 2014 winners crowned. There will be a drinks reception, live entertainment, free food and a special guest appearance from the Minister for Civic Society, Nick Hurd MP.
