Boris meets Burntwood

Mulki and Wendy from Burntwood School met Mayor of London Boris Johnson at City Hall today, as they were presented with their Spirit of London Award certificates.

As part of an Envision team in their school last year, they organised a forum where Sixth Form students and Police officers could meet and question each other. They also explored perceptions of Muslim women and hosted a debate on wearing the hijab in their school. Two of the team were sponsored to wear the hijab for a week and record whether they were treated differently as a result, raising £180 for an orphanage in Iraq in the process.

The team made it to the final three of the Spirit of London Award shortlist for 'Community Champions', in recognition of the ways they had brought different communities together and helped to improve tolerance and understanding.
