House of Lords Debate

Mon 10 Aug 2009

Envision students were among 200 young people from across the country who held a debate in the House of Lords on the 10th July as part of this year's Shine Week. This was set up to recognise all the great things that young people achieve beside their exam results - overcoming personal difficulties and using their talents to help themselves and other people. The House of Lords - more usually full of men in robes than teenagers in jeans - saw lively debates on issues such as the negative perception of young people. The Lord Speaker, Baroness Hayman, said:

“These young people have strong views on improving opportunities and on redefining what society means by talent.”

Envision students from St James' Catholic High School and Seven Kings' School were invited to Parliament to showcase their brilliant environmental projects on the 21st July. Along with Envision founder and Director Nick, and Fundraising Officer Saskia - and young people from other environmental groups - they were invited to Westminster. They were there for the press launch of the Department of Children, Schools and Families (now the Department of Education) Young Sustainable Activists Programme, to encourage young people to become the driving force behind making Britain a more sustainable place.
