Travel and Transport

Most of us love to travel and dream of exotic, exciting holidays to far-flung places. We can learn about history and nature, and immerse ourselves in dramatically different cultures. However, many tourists don’t stop to think about the impact their week in the sun might have on the environment and local community. There are now plenty of travelling experiences that involve volunteer work with the local community or nature conservation, or which monitor and minimize the environmental impact of travelling.

Campaign groups are lobbying the government to stop the expansion of airports and the cheap flight boom. They draw attention to the commitments to reduce carbon emissions and the huge emissions from air travel. British holiday resorts are experiencing a revival as holiday makers choose to explore the coast and countryside, supporting rural communities rather than jetting off to another European resort.

Transport around town is also changing. Cycling is becoming more and more popular as people look for a healthier and often quicker route to work or school. People are choosing to use public transport instead of cars for shorter journeys and car-sharing schemes are popping up all over the place.
