Film-making workshop in Brum

Envision Grads came to the Custard Factory for a film-making workshop, run by production company, Mouth that Roars.

The young people were thrown straight in at the deep end and given a camera kit to assemble and figure out how to use.  After a few practice runs, they went outside to put their filming skills into action, trying out interesting angles and a variety of backgrounds to make their shots more interesting.  Passers by were interviewed about what they thought about young people, and what thought young people could do to be seen in a better light.

The teams then made a comedy and a documentary piece about the Custard Factory, managing to interview Jon Bentley from the Gadget Show and even blagging some free custard creams along the way!

Zabz, a grad mentor from Aston Manor School, said “I really enjoyed meeting the other grads, and finding our more about their projects.  It was also really good to get to use professional camera equipment like the boom mikes and see how things like background and lighting affect the content of the film.”

The grads are going to go on to use the tips they learnt to make their own films about a range of issues from stereotypes of young people to getting more youth facilities.  These will all be entered for the Envision ‘Truth About Youth’ film competition – with the best film getting shown at this year’s Summer ceremonies.
